Junk Removal Hawthorne

Junk Removal on
Hawthorne

The funky inner-SE spine — 1900s–1920s no-elevator walk-up apartments interleaved with Craftsman bungalows along Hawthorne, Belmont, and Division. Renters turn over constantly, and when a lease ends the couch and the mattress have to come down two or three flights of stairs. We carry it down, no surcharge, flat photo-quoted price, same-day when we can — and no Oregon sales tax.

Walk-up move-outs, carried down the stairs

Hawthorne and its cross-streets (97214, 97215) are Portland's funky, walkable heart — Sunnyside and Richmond on either side, the bungalow belt of Ladd's Addition a few blocks north, and a retail spine packed with shops, theaters, and food carts. The housing is a mix that defines the junk work: dense 1900s–1920s no-elevator walk-up apartments pressed in among Craftsman bungalows. Renter churn is high, so the everyday job is the walk-up move-out — a whole apartment's worth of furniture, or just the couch and the mattress, coming down a narrow pre-war staircase to a busy street. We do the carrying. There's no per-flight fee; the flat price already assumes the stairs.

Then there are the bungalows. The single-family Craftsman homes through Sunnyside, Richmond, and Ladd's sit over full basements, and those fill up the way old Portland basements do — decades of damp boxes, broken furniture, and stored odds and ends. Clearing one is the other half of what we do here, carried up the basement stairs and out. Whichever it is, the deal is the same: send photos, get a flat number that covers the labor, the carry, the drive, and the disposal, with no hourly meter and no tax line at the end.

What we haul on Hawthorne

  • Walk-up apartment move-outs — whole-unit clears carried down the stairs in one trip.
  • Couch + mattress hauls — the quick two-piece move-out, quoted as a single flat price.
  • Bungalow basement cleanouts — Sunnyside, Richmond, and Ladd's basements emptied and carried up.
  • Single heavy pieces — a sleeper sofa or a dresser out of a third-floor unit without you lifting it.
  • Appliances & furniture — fridges, washers, and dressers pulled from tight apartments and old kitchens.

Cheaper than dragging it to the curb yourself

Plenty of Hawthorne renters ask whether the city will just take it. It can — but there's a catch. Portland's bulky-waste program is curbside-only, priced per item with an $18 trip fee plus $6–$51 an item, and it can take up to seven days to come — and you still have to wrestle the couch down the stairs and out to the curb yourself, which is the whole problem in a third-floor walk-up. We're the other option: crew carries it out of the unit, same day, one flat price with no sales tax. On a tight retail street like Hawthorne we also plan the truck's loading so we're not blocking a lane while we carry — the access quirk here is the street, not just the stairs.

Where it goes after

Usable furniture from a move-out gets a second life — we route resellable couches, dressers, and household goods to Goodwill of the Columbia Willamette, Community Warehouse, or Habitat's ReStore rather than the landfill. Mattresses and box springs are recycled free under Oregon's stewardship program, TVs and electronics go to Oregon E-Cycles at no charge, and metal appliances get recycled. It's the eco-minded way inner-SE expects it done, and diverting all of that keeps our disposal cost — and your flat price — down.

What Hawthorne customers say

★★★★★

"Second-floor walk-up on SE Belmont, lease ending, and I had a couch and a queen bed to lose. They carried both down the stairs, no stair fee, no tax, flat price from a photo. Done same afternoon."

— Cody A., Sunnyside
★★★★★

"Cleared out the basement of our Richmond bungalow — years of damp boxes and an old dresser. Carried it all up, donated what was good, and the price was exactly what they quoted. No surprises."

— Bethany S., Richmond
★★★★★

"Just needed a sleeper sofa gone from a third-floor apartment off Hawthorne. The city would've made me drag it to the curb and wait a week — these folks carried it down same day for a flat price. Easy call."

— Jordan M., Hawthorne
