Belmont & Mt Tabor
Craftsman bungalows climbing the slopes of an extinct volcano, most of them over a full basement with a detached garage out back. The signature job is the hillside basement and garage cleanout — decades of storage carried up the stairs and down a long or steep driveway to the truck. We handle the grade, the stairs, and the damp, quote it flat from a photo, and there's no access surcharge and no Oregon sales tax.
Bungalow cleanouts on the volcano's slopes
Belmont, Mt Tabor, and South Tabor (97215, into 97214) wrap around the wooded park at the top of the hill — one of the only extinct volcanoes inside a U.S. city. The housing is classic inner-eastside: Craftsman bungalows and cottages stepped up the grade, most with a full basement below and a detached garage in the back. Families have lived in a lot of these homes for a long time, and both the basement and the garage fill the way they do everywhere on the wet side of the state — damp boxes, retired furniture, paint cans, camping gear, and the tools that never made it back to the shelf. Clearing that out, carried up the basement stairs by us, is the everyday work here.
What makes Tabor its own thing is the grade. Homes on the slope often have a run of exterior steps up from the street and a long or steep driveway between the garage and where a truck can park. Portland's hills are gentler than Seattle's, but the carry is real, and it's ours to make — there's no access fee for the driveway and no surcharge for the stairs. There are renters here too, in the older walk-up apartments along Belmont, and their move-outs come down the stairs the same way. Every version is one flat photo-quoted price that covers the labor, the carry, the drive, and disposal, with no tax line at the end because Oregon doesn't have one.
What we haul around Mt Tabor
- Hillside basement cleanouts — full below-grade basements emptied and carried up the stairs.
- Detached garage cleanouts — tools, tires, lawn gear, and the overflow from the house.
- Damp & moldy storage — water-stained boxes and mildewed furniture hauled without fuss.
- Walk-up move-outs along Belmont — couch, mattress, and the rest carried down, no surcharge.
- Yard & garden equipment — mowers, grills, patio furniture, and shed clear-outs.
- Appliances — old fridges and freezers pulled from the basement, freon handled and metal recycled.
Grade, stairs, and the long driveway — handled
The one question we get most on the hill is about access: my driveway is steep, the garage is way back, there are steps up to the door — is that going to cost more? The answer is no. We look at the grade in your photos, plan whether to back the truck up the driveway or stage on the street and carry down, and price the labor of that carry into the flat quote up front. You don't pay by the step, by the foot of driveway, or by the flight of basement stairs. And because we come to the home and load from wherever it sits, you never stage anything at the curb — which matters when the curb is a hundred feet and a hill away from the garage.

Why not just use the city bulky-waste pickup?
You can, but it fits a Tabor cleanout poorly. Portland's bulky-waste program is curbside-only, charged per item at an $18 trip fee plus $6–$51 an item, and it can take up to seven days — and everything has to be dragged out to the curb yourself. On a hillside lot, that means hauling each piece up out of the basement and down a long driveway before the city ever shows up, and then repeating the request when the basement holds more than a handful of items. We do the opposite: crew clears the whole basement or garage in one visit, carries it from wherever it sits, and gives you a single flat price with no tax. For anything beyond a couple of curb-ready items, on-demand is both faster and easier here.
Where it goes after we load it
Diversion matters to this part of the eastside, and it's built into how we work. Resellable furniture and household goods go to Goodwill of the Columbia Willamette, Community Warehouse, or Habitat's ReStore, with a donation receipt when you'd like one. Mattresses and box springs are recycled free under Oregon's stewardship program, TVs and computers go to Oregon E-Cycles at no cost, and the metal in an old garage fridge or a dead mower gets recycled. Keeping all of that out of the landfill is both the Portland way and the reason our disposal cost — and your flat price — stays low.
What Mt Tabor customers say
"Steep driveway, detached garage packed to the rafters, and a basement full of damp boxes. I figured the hill would cost extra — it didn't. They carried everything down, flat price from photos, and hauled the old chest freezer too."
"We finally cleared out my mother's basement on the South Tabor slope — years of storage, most of it soggy. They were patient on the stairs, donated the good furniture, and the quote never moved. No sales tax was a bonus."
"Walk-up off Belmont, moving out, one couch and a queen mattress. They carried both down the stairs same day, no stair fee, exactly the flat price they quoted from a photo. Couldn't have been easier."
