The Portland year

This city's junk removal calendar is shaped by exactly one thing: it is dry for about three months and wet for about nine.

Late June to mid-September — peak. Everything happens at once. Leases turn over, PSU, Reed, Lewis and Clark and the community colleges empty and refill, people finally deal with the garage they have been avoiding since October, back gardens get cleared, and every mover, truck and rental counter in the metro is committed. October to February — quiet. Wet, dark and easy to book. Jobs skew indoors: basements, garages, and the specific category of things ruined by being stored outdoors through the previous winter.

Weekday versus weekend

Weekday mornings are the best slot in this metro, for reasons that are specific to how Portland streets work.

On a weekday morning the inner eastside has parked cars but not a parked-solid curb. By Saturday afternoon on Clinton, in Ladd's, around Sunnyside or in Sellwood, there is genuinely nowhere for a truck to sit, and the crew ends up carrying further than they otherwise would. Same price, longer job.

Weekday mornings also work better for anything involving a building: mid-rise service elevators in the Pearl, Lloyd and South Waterfront are contested at weekends, and the office that has to release them is staffed on weekdays. Storage facilities are the same — the lifts and the loading bays are free on a Tuesday morning and queued on a Saturday.

Saturdays are fine, popular, and booked first. If you need one, book earlier.

The month-end crunch

Leases in this metro turn heavily at the end of the month, and the last three days of any month are busier than the middle.

Compound that with the season and you get the two moments to plan around:

• The end of August. Month-end plus peak moving season plus students. Book a week ahead at minimum.
• The end of June. The start of the wave, often underestimated.

Mid-month, by contrast, is easy in almost any season. If your job is not tied to a lease date, aim for the 8th to the 20th and you will get the window you asked for.

Timing it around the weather

The price does not change with the weather. The outcome of your whole plan does.

If you want to donate or give things away first, do the clearance between June and September. Items stay dry while they wait, the free-pile tradition is at full strength, and Buy Nothing claimants will actually drive across town. Every piece diverted is a smaller truck fraction, which is real money against a ladder that runs from $241 to $732.

If you are clearing a back garden, a carport or a detached garage, September is the smart month. Everything is dry and light. The same job in February is heavier, muddier and slower, and the side yard is a slick strip of pavers.

If it is already raining, do not stage anything outdoors. Keep it inside, let the crew carry it out, and skip the step where a donatable sofa becomes a soaked one.

Timing it around your own deadline

The jobs that go wrong are the ones booked too close to something that cannot move.

• Move-out. Book the cleanout for the day after the movers, not the same day. Two trucks on one narrow eastside street is a parking problem, and you will not know what is genuinely left until the movers have gone.
• Listing photography. Book the cleanout at least two days before the photographer, so there is room for a second pass if the basement turns out bigger than expected.
• A closing. A week of slack. Estate and pre-sale clearances in Irvington, Laurelhurst or Eastmoreland routinely run a load larger than the family estimated.
• A rental turnover. Same day as the legal steps clearing, ideally, because every day is lost rent.
• An appliance delivery. Same day the old one comes off, not a week later on the covered porch.

Same-day and next-day

Same-day is often available and it costs exactly the same — there is no same-day surcharge. Availability is a scheduling question, not a pricing one.

The realistic picture: in the quiet months, same-day or next-day is usually fine. In the last week of August, assume it is not, and book ahead.

One thing that genuinely helps a short-notice booking: a precise item list. "A sofa, a queen mattress and box spring, and about ten bags" gives a crew the right truck. "Some furniture" does not, and a truck that arrives too full is the one situation that turns one visit into two — and a second visit carries another $75 minimum.
